Family Involvement & Patient Advocacy

The involvement of families is integral to the quality of care and quality of life of nursing home patients. I am proposing a web application to bridge a communication gap that exists between care providers and families. This problem is extremely present with the absence of families in the caretaking environment. Some families are concerned because they are unable to attend doctors appointments, be there at mealtimes, and some cant even call patients because the patient is hard of hearing and can’t hear normal phone conversations.

This web application would allow caretakers to record vitals, mental health observations, new medications, new observed behaviors, doctors notes, and more. It can include data visualizations of weight, blood pressure, etc. to alert families of how an individual is doing over time.

It can also house important decision-making information and official documents for families.

Families can also voice concerns to staff, and possibly schedule a time to visit their loved one (as a crowd control measure).

We should consult with nursing home staff and families of those in nursing homes to get a better feel for the necessary features and workflow.

Please share any additional details about this challenge that will help the Maker Teams design a solution

Could the caretaker recording function be integrated with the tools that they already use?

There are some medical APIs that we can check out, here is a long list :

Would you be available to answer questions as the Maker Teams work on their designs to the challenge(s) described here?
